Looking for somewhere fresh to ride? We are excited to launch a brand new Hidden Gems series as part of Bike Month across the GTHA and Guelph. These weekly features will give you insider tips on some of the best trails, paths, and on-street bike facilities. Whether you cycle to work, ride the trails on the weekend, or bike to get around town, we hope you’ll find a hidden gem. Then, share it with a friend, colleague, or family member who wants to give biking a try this spring.

This bridge lived a past life serving to transport gravel. Now, it’s been rehabilitated to welcome people biking and walking - and is home to the City of Brampton’s first ever pedestrian and cycling counter.

The Franceschini Pedestrian Bridge is located between Williams Parkway and Bovaird Drive and crosses over Highway 410. Opened in 2018, the bridge was previously used for construction to remove gravel from an abandoned quarry. In 2014, the Ministry of Transportation and the City of Brampton announced a partnership to rehabilitate the bridge.

Bridge reconstruction included the removal of old railings and installation of new ones, stripping down the road bed and patching up concrete breaks, installing a new textured and coloured asphalt surface, and putting in a new lighting system. The City also installed new trail connections on both sides of the bridge, and added drainage.

The bridge is now a safe crossing option for pedestrians and cyclists and connects to Bramalea Community Park and the Lakelands North subdivision. The bridge also enhances our active transportation infrastructure and connects to the “City Loop”, a 40 km loop of trails, bike lanes, and multi-use paths that circle around the city, and connect to key destinations.

Coming May 1, take the Bike Month pledge!

Pledge to ride to school or work on Bike to Work Day, Monday May 27 and/or throughout June for a chance to win one of three trips for two courtesy of VIA Rail (to Quebec City, Montreal or Ottawa) or a weekend getaway courtesy of Welcome Cyclists. Contest closes June 18.
