Tell us a bit about you and the area you live in.
With a job typically sedentary in nature, cycling to and from work helps to add activity into each day and provides a sense of accomplishment even before the workday begins. I live seconds from access to Guelph's extensive trail network or could quickly be out riding in the countryside, lending to plenty of opportunities for riding and exploring.

How often do you bike to work and why?

I try to bike to work everyday. I started to commute by bike when studying/working at the University of Guelph to avoid parking costs and for its convenience above taking the bus. However, I quickly discovered how much I enjoyed my time commuting and continued for that reason, even now with a workplace where driving would be an easy option.

How did you celebrate Bike Month this year?

I celebrated by biking as many days as possible. I had recently fallen out of the routine after years of being a year-round, everyday bike commuter. I took Bike Month as the motivation to get back into the habit again and continue henceforth.

What are you most excited to use your MEC gift card for?

I am excited to use my MEC gift card for a new daypack or cycling gear.

Thia Walters is a student studying Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University she attended the bike to work kick off event at Riverwalk Commons in Newmarket on May 27th.

How often do you bike to work and why?

I bike to work about once a week or once every two but during the school year, if I get out on my bike about once or twice a week. I bike because it’s a great form of exercise, an effective means of transportation, and one way that I can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Tell us a bit about you and the area you live in.

I spend a lot of time in both Newmarket and downtown Toronto and what interests me most is how each area is growing and changing, and how they compare and contrast each other. I think each has its own charm and its own perspective on inviting cyclists into the municipality and I am glad to be a part of a growing movement.

How did you celebrate Bike Month this year?

I celebrated Bike Month this year by attending my local Bike to Work Day/Month event at the Newmarket Riverwalk Commons, by biking to work more often, and sharing the event with family and friends.

What are you most excited to use your MEC gift card for?

I’m most excited to use my MEC gift card to purchase a new winter jacket!

Tell us a bit about you and the area you live in.

Mid-town is a great area to cycle for a quick run to Tim Hortons, the shops and cafes. Moreover our condo is conveniently located near E.T Seton Park which connects to Sunnybrook Park to the northwest and Wilket Creek park to the north.

How did you celebrate Bike Month this year?

I wouldn’t say I celebrated the Bike Month per se, but I have been cycling every weekend since the arrival of summer this year. There is a direct path down from Vanderhoof Avenue into the E.T Seton park entrance. So when I go down that path, it is the best time of the day for me, especially because it reminds me of my childhood when I was part of a ‘bike gang’ and we were going everywhere on our bikes as a group. Sometimes cycling five to six hours a day.

What are you most excited to use your MEC gift card for?

MEC gift card would be great incentive to buy some accessories I needed, like water bottle, backpack and some camping equipment for summer trips.
