Tell us a bit about you and the area you live in.

I live in Hamilton, and work as a physiotherapist. I fit biking into my daily life by using it to commute to work and to get around the city whenever possible. I find when I’ve taken a break from riding my bike - even if for a vacation - that I miss it. I’m lucky because my route to work includes great cycling infrastructure and I have bike lanes the whole way, with some parts protected, and a little bit on a cycle track as well.

How often do you bike to work and why?

I bike to work almost every day (five days a week), unless the weather is severe, and then I take the bus instead. I bike because I try to use my car as little as possible to help reduce stress on the environment. I also love to bike because it makes me feel happy and I get a bit of exercise into my day naturally.

How did you celebrate Bike Month this year?

I went to the Bike Month event at Hamilton City Hall one morning before work. I realised a colleague was trying to bike to work this month, so I also chatted with her regularly about how it was going. She was impressed at how easy it was for her to accomplish.

Where are you most excited to use your MEC gift card and VIA Rail voucher?

I might put the MEC card towards a paddleboard, so I can get that and my bike in the picture. It's my dream to commute to work by the water.

Danielle Austin of Toronto commutes by bike to the Financial District to enjoy some exercise, save time, and avoid waiting for transit.

Tell us a bit about you and the area you live in.

I live in the west of Toronto around St. Clair and Keele. I love this city and I love biking in it.

How often do you bike to work and why?

I try to ride to work most days starting in the spring all the way through most of fall. I work in the Financial District so my commute is about 30 to 45 minutes. My favorite route to work is down the West Toronto Railpath and then along the lake. I like to ride because I get some exercise, it saves me money and I can avoid all the frustrations that come with commuting on transit.

How did you celebrate Bike Month this year?

I celebrated Bike Month by making an effort to ride almost every day to work and by starting to teach my son how to ride his bike. I hope that soon we can enjoy a good ride together.

Where are you most excited to use your MEC gift card and VIA Rail voucher?

I will be using the MEC card for some new carry-on luggage, camping gear and a new helmet. I am planning on using my VIA Rail voucher to take my son on the train through the Rockies from Edmonton to Vancouver.

Tim Donegani, an urban planner working at the City of Guelph, shows how fun it is to be a multi-modal family.

Tell us a bit about you and the area you live in.

I am a 36 year old husband and dad of two (three and four year old). I live in Guelph and work for the City of Guelph as an urban planner. Our family enjoys time outdoors, camping, anything “on the water” and I’ve taken up triathlons over the last couple of years. I bike to work just about every day. This year I took my daughter to school (Junior Kindergarten) in a trailer on the way to work (although sometimes if we’re organized in the morning and the weather is nice she rides her scooter as I bike beside). I've always really enjoyed biking to work; it's even better now that I get to enjoy it with my daughter every day.

How often do you bike to work and why?

Almost every day; I think I took the bus on about five days this winter. I bike to save money (we have one car), time (i don’t feel like being on the busses’ schedules) and the opportunity to get some exercise and enjoy the fun of biking as bookends to often stressful and always sedentary workdays.

How did you celebrate Bike Month this year?

I attended the Bike to Work day festivities at Guelph City Hall and attended a showing of “Why We Cycle” at the Bookshelf Cinema in Guelph.

Where are you most excited to use your MEC gift card and VIA Rail voucher?

I am most excited to use the MEC gift card for a wetsuit for my triathlons. I plan to use the VIA Rail voucher to take my kids on the train to Toronto a couple of times this summer (ROM, Centre Island, maybe CNE) as my son loves trains, but has never been on one.

Congratulations Amy, Danielle, and Tim, and thanks to everyone who entered and helped us celebrate Bike Month this year! We hope you keep on riding through the summer and beyond.
